My Research: Survey of Second Grade Readers
In order to explore the connection between background knowledge and students' literacy performance and perception, I surveyed my reading class of 23 students. I chose questions that would give me a better understanding of how background knowledge might impact students' motivation, interest, confidence, and "buy in" regarding reading.
Findings
My students are highly motivated by activities and projects that provide firsthand experience.
Background knowledge is a factor that can positively or negatively affect students confidence and interest in reading.
My students have a high level of self-awareness about their own learning. They want to know that I am interested in finding out how they learn best!
Surveys are a great tool to get to know the readers in your classroom. The survey I conducted provided valuable data about my students that helped me plan my literacy instruction.
